My Dinner With Android: Who is any of this good for?

100% agree with this. It’s a matter of perspective. While we look at it like it’s about Android taking on iOS, the manufacturers have no desire to champion that cause. To them, consumers don’t know the difference between platforms, and they think in terms of handsets. 

They want to sell as many handsets as possible. They want you to continue to buy their handsets every year. Why would they risk giving you a software update to your OS that breathes life into your phone and make you say “No thanks, I’m good” when it’s time to upgrade?

Remember also, that their competition is each other. Why would they want their OS to look the same as their competitor? They are too insecure to sell the device on hardware alone, and so have to make the software look different and fancier.
